May 3 is World Press Freedom Day. It’s an opportunity to remember that being free is a great responsibility and a daily struggle.

The theme for 2017 World Press Freedom Day is “Critical Minds for Critical Times.”

UN Secretary General António Guterres in his message said: “Journalists go to the most dangerous places to give voice to the voiceless.”

In Armenia, journalists’ work is stressful not just in crisis situations. The elections, Electric Yerevan protest, April War, capture of a Yerevan police station — all were dangerous and accountable work days for journalists. But critical thinking and making quick decisions are no less important in everyday work.

World Press Freedom Day symbolizes journalists’ unobstructed work and the guarantee of pluralism.

The hashtags used in social media posts about this day are #pressfreedom and #WPFD2017.
