This was the first one since 2002. The Union\u2019s president of the last 25 years, Astghik Gevorgyan, declared her resignation at the start of the conference.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Former president of the Journalists\u2019 Union of Armenia Astghik Gevorgyan\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4726\/38659191804_88a4184c3e.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Satik Seyranyan, chief editor of the newspaper <em>168 Zham<\/em>, had announced at the start of the week that she wants to head the Union of Journalists. At the conference, journalist, Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) parliamentary faction member Margarit Yesayan nominated and defended her candidacy. Public TV of Armenia journalist and Yerevan State University (YSU) PhD student Harutyun Tsatryan nominated himself.<\/p>\n<p>The number of people participating in the conference was unclear. No advance registration had been done. <a href=\"http:\/\/ypc.am\/oldypc\/partners\/ln\/en\">According to the website of the Yerevan Press Club<\/a>, the Journalists\u2019 Union of Armenia has 1,520 members.<\/p>\n<p>Of the Union\u2019s members present, 57 voted in favor of Seyranyan\u2019s candidacy. Tsatryan received no votes \u2014 nor was he expecting to receive any. He had nominated himself to underscore the Union\u2019s unclear status. \u201cNeither I nor anyone else was properly notified of this conference, no voting procedure exists, and delegates have not received mandates. If everything is in a state of neglect, then I\u2019m nominating myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Journalist, YSU PhD student Harutyun Tsatryan during the conference of the Journalists\u2019 Union\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4593\/25497871428_fd25434846.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seyranyan urged her journalist colleagues to join the Union and \u201ctogether fight to not only raise, but also reform the [media] sector\u2019s problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As president of the Union of Journalists of Armenia, Seyranyan is preparing first \u201cto take stock of all the resources, to reassess the human resources first of all and try to change the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Union of Journalists of Armenia\u2019s new board members are Roland Sharoyan, Zaven Khachikyan, Artyom Yerkanyan, Naghash Martirosyan, Grigor Janikyan, Zara Aramyan, and Marieta Makaryan.<\/p>\n<p>The Union of Journalists of Armenia was founded on March 27, 1959. The Journalists\u2019 House in Yerevan opened on June 1, 1978.
