These are emoticons that allow readers to emotionally react to a story and assess the author\u2019s work. From a visual and applicable point of view, criticons are like Facebook\u2019s reaction buttons (Like, Love, Angry, and so on) or the emojis used in chats.<\/p>\n<p>Media.am offers an example of the use of criticons [at the bottom of every article].<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4221\/34368478760_03c615fa92_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Readers often don\u2019t want to take the time to leave a comment. Criticons help readers quickly express their reaction to a story. For example, if the piece is so good that it should be encouraged, then readers can click the \u201cMust read\u201d criticon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4178\/34591204592_91b118ee54_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And if the reader thinks that the piece he read isn\u2019t objective, is promotional and commissioned, he can click on the \u201cPaid-for content\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4162\/34591204692_7161245083_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Overall, there are seven criticons: Clickbait headline, Paid-for content, Must read, Fake information, Useless, Kudos to the journalist, and Copy-Paste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\" dir=\"ltr\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/xUA7aXZk5fZEHxMO6k\" width=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The criticons allow newsrooms to get the opportunity for additional feedback from readers.<\/p>\n<p>Media Initiatives Center\u2019s Media Literacy Project Manager Lusine Grigoryan says: \u201cCriticons will help make the media outlet\u2019s website more interactive and appealing. On the other hand, it will contribute to better quality media content. When readers have the opportunity to react to a piece, when they can assess the journalist\u2019s work, the media works more responsibly and vigilantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The criticons are available in three languages: Armenian, Russian, and English. The criticons can be in any color, according to a site\u2019s design.<\/p>\n<p>News websites\u2019 editorial teams can use these tools free of charge.
