



{"id":6799,"date":"2016-07-30T03:58:18","date_gmt":"2016-07-30T03:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/media.am\/attack-on-journalists-working-in-sari-tagh\/"},"modified":"2016-07-30T03:58:18","modified_gmt":"2016-07-30T03:58:18","slug":"attack-on-journalists-working-in-sari-tagh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/media.am\/en\/newsroom\/2016\/07\/30\/6799\/","title":{"rendered":"Attack on Journalists Working in Sari Tagh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At around 11 pm on July 29, journalists were attacked while reporting on the dispersal of demonstrators in Yerevan\u2019s Sari Tagh district.<\/p>\n<p>Particularly affected were Azatutyun (RFE\/RL\u2019s Armenian service) journalists Karlen Aslanyan and Hovhannes Movsisyan, and camera operator Garik Harutyunyan, all of whom were working on the scene.<\/p>\n<p>On Azatutyun radio\u2019s airwaves, Movsisyan said that those who attacked them knew very well they were journalists: the crew was in the middle of a live broadcast, and all three members of the group wore press badges.<\/p>\n<p>Director of RFE\/RL\u2019s Armenian Broadcast Service Hrair Tamrazian, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tamrazianh\/posts\/1093727647341285?pnref=story\">status update on Facebook<\/a> [AM], said that hitting journalists were plainclothes police officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur journalists Karlen Aslanyan and Hovhannes Movsisyan were attacked. They had press badges and journalistic devices. Both were subjected to violence, received blows from batons by plainclothes police officers. They told Hovhannes, \u2018Are you filming, yeah?\u2019 They approached and began to attack, smashed [their] equipment. It\u2019s terrible. As told by Hovhannes and Karlen, the officers tore off the press badges. The demonstrators were also beaten. It\u2019s just horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"313\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Ftamrazianh%2Fposts%2F1093727647341285&amp;width=500\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family:arial; font-size:16px\">Another journalist documenting police actions in Sari Tagh, Gevorg Ghazaryan, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/initiaty\/status\/759104722200563712\">tweeted<\/a> that he was beaten and his camera was brutally taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/police?src=hash\">#police<\/a> brutally took my cameras &amp; beat me<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gevorg Ghazaryan (@initiaty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/initiaty\/status\/759104722200563712\">July 29, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.am\/eng\/news\/339646.html\">According to News.am<\/a>, \u201cA blast exploded at the feet of CivilNet\u2019s journalist and camera operator, as a result of which they sustained injuries. A1+\u2019s reporter also received burns. Also injured at Sari Tagh were <em>Arachin Lratvakan<\/em> reporter Mariam Grigoryan and camera operator David Harutyunyan. Panorama.am\u2019s camera operator Hovik Grigoryan suffered from the blast. Also suffered was Lragir.am\u2019s camera operator\u201d [translated from the Armenian &#8211; Trans.].<\/p>\n<p>Armenian Public Radio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armradio.am\/hy\/2016\/07\/29\/%D5%BD%D5%A1%D6%80%D5%AB-%D5%A9%D5%A1%D5%B2%D5%B8%D6%82%D5%B4-%D5%AC%D6%80%D5%A1%D5%A3%D6%80%D5%B8%D5%B2%D5%B6%D5%A5%D6%80-%D5%A5%D5%B6-%D5%BF%D5%B8%D6%82%D5%AA%D5%A5%D5%AC\/\">reports<\/a> [AM] that \u201cArmenia TV\u2019s Zham news program reporter Aghvan Asoyan and camera operator Albert Galstyan were beaten by unidentified persons at Sari Tagh. Unidentified persons also snatched the camera and microphone and broke [them].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police <a href=\"http:\/\/www.a1plus.am\/1477285.html\">have promised<\/a> [AM] to immediately investigate \u201call incidents tied to representatives of the media,\u201d determine the circumstances, and \u201cfurther inform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The protest at Sari Tagh, during which journalists were attacked, was carried out by supporters of a group representing Sasna Tsrer [the \u201cDaredevils of Sassoun\u201d] who seized the Police Patrol Regiment building in Yerevan on July 17.<\/p>\n<p>During this domestic political crisis, there have been other incidents when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.media.am\/en\/Erebuni-Protest-Journalists-Beaten\">journalists were beaten<\/a>.
