The film, called The Price of Change, contains a number of manipulative or false allegations, as well as conspiracy theories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the film, which lasts about an hour, is dedicated not to Armenia, but to Russia\u0589 The authors and subjects criticize Nikol Pashinyan, compare him with the Russian opposition Alexei Navalny and urge Russians not to support Kremlin&#8217;s opponent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media.am singled out the main propaganda narratives and incorrect statements voiced in the film.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conspiracy Theory: The Velvet Revolution was carried out by Western powers<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main narratives of the &#8220;Russia Today&#8221; film was the theory about the dark and evil Western NGOs that are often spoken about in Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors and protagonists of the film kept insisting that the West was preparing the grounds for a revolution in Armenia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of the film paid the most attention to the &#8220;Open Society Foundation &#8211; Armenia,&#8221; which is financed by wealthy American, George Soros. This narrative was especially actively voiced by one of the main protagonists of the film, Narek Malyan, who is the founder of the far-right &#8220;Veto&#8221; group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=1503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Soros earns money in Azerbaijan and spends it in Armenia, that is why his fund does not operate in Azerbaijan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u274c This statement is manipulative: Soros&#8217;s office is banned in Azerbaijan because President Ilham Aliyev, using the same conspiracy theory and propaganda tricks, declared Soros an enemy of the Azerbaijani nation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure on civil society and NGOs has been a feature of Russia&#8217;s domestic policy in recent years. More and more organizations in Russia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/feature\/2020\/12\/28\/budte-gotovy-podatsya-v-inoagenty-inache-shtraf-i-vozmozhno-pyat-let-tyurmy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are being declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as &#8220;extremists&#8221; or &#8220;foreign agents&#8221; and their activities banned. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/games\/religioznaya-gruppa-blagorodnyy-orden-dyavola-ili-obschestvo-temnyh-stareyshin-dusha-angela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journalists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/novayagazeta.ru\/articles\/2021\/01\/26\/167390-rossiyskie-pravozaschitniki-obratilis-v-sovet-evropy-iz-za-prinyatiya-v-strane-novyh-repressivnyh-zakonov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">civil society representatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> note that this is how Russian authorities fight against the opposition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another protagonist of the film, activist Marine Manucharyan, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=1421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Western organizations &#8220;got rid of the history of the Armenian Church at school. In its stead has come the sexual education of young children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u274c This statement is manipulative: There is no subject of sex education in Armenian public schools. Despite this fact, the topic is regularly manipulated in the press and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/verified\/2020\/09\/03\/23798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/verified\/2020\/05\/27\/21653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">textbooks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on sex education appear. Moreover, according to the Minister of Education and Science Vahram Dumanyan, the subject of the history of the Armenian Church <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/armtimes.com\/hy\/article\/211995?fbclid=IwAR3pAW9VMVmU6A3iWINOSE5D9WweC6WnbOqdQqfj1eyXqXzdsJe1tLi4AXo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the school curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Armenian expert of the film repeated the narrative that minors are involved in protests via social networks<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attitude towards civil society was not the only coincidence between the film&#8217;s claims and the Kremlin&#8217;s policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blogger Tigran Kocharyan, talking about the use of social networks to organize demonstrations in Armenia, Moldova and Belarus, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the propaganda narrative spread in Russia in recent months that Russian political forces are recruiting the main audience of TikTok: children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Russian authorities not only circulate this theory in the press but also issue fines and initiate lawsuits based on this accusation. Opposition figures and public activists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meduza.io\/feature\/2021\/04\/18\/studenty-i-vypuskniki-obratilis-s-otkrytym-pismom-v-podderzhku-redaktorov-zhurnala-doxa-k-rukovodstvu-vshe-i-drugih-rossiyskih-vuzov?utm_source=telegram&amp;utm_medium=live&amp;utm_campaign=live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a political context in these accusations.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the film about Pashinyan is dedicated to the Russian opposition Navalny<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 20% of the one-hour film &#8220;The Price of Change&#8221; is not about Armenia, but about Russia. During the film, the Armenian speakers repeated several times that the Russian people should not believe and support the opposition figure Alexei Navalny, because Navalny is the Russian Pashinyan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each such exhortation of the subjects was followed by passages lasting 3-5 minutes, where the authors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=1896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Navalny, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=2573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoke about<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his misdeeds and corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the assertion is not refuted, is it true?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the subjects of the film, political scientist Narek Samsonyan, claimed that Pashinyan is not fighting corruption, but he is corrupt himself. &#8220;According to unconfirmed rumors, they [Pashinyan&#8217;s family] bought a house in Canada and the United States.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journalists checking the facts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fip.am\/11793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had checked and denied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the news mentioned by Samsonyan months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to remember that not being denied is not enough for the news to be considered real: it must be supported by facts and evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not mentioned in the film that Azerbaijan started the war<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking about the start of the second Artsakh war, the authors of the film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-DaxLv7yxMQ?t=159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoided mentioning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Azerbaijan started the war.
