{"id":26808,"date":"2021-03-16T17:56:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T17:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/media.am\/?p=26808"},"modified":"2021-03-30T19:06:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-30T19:06:30","slug":"statuses-that-become-news-the-media-covered-the-coronavirus-with-political-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/media.am\/en\/verified\/2021\/03\/16\/26808\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook Posts That Become News: The Media Covered The Coronavirus With Political Posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Media Initiatives Center (MIC) conducted <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/lab\/2021\/03\/12\/26664\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020 studying the three main topics on the Armenian agenda at the time:&nbsp; the coronavirus, the Artsakh issue and the Lanzarote Convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research revealed that the coronavirus has received a political framework in Armenia, and most of the materials presenting the epidemic in a political context are copied from other sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, 41% of the articles studied were based on the opinion of a third party, and 31% were entirely third-party speech, mainly copied from social networks or other media. Only 15% of the materials contained a journalists&#8217; analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of these findings, we looked in more detail at the data collected with the MIC survey to find out what sources journalists used to cover the coronavirus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We downloaded more than 11,000 texts from News.am and 168.am websites and singled out the hyperlinks contained in them. It turned out that media outlets often refer to Facebook users or pages. In this article, we will discuss which Facebook users were the main newsmakers on the topic of coronavirus last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the MIC survey also covered Tert.am, it was not technically possible to obtain complete data from this site. That is why Tert.am is not considered in our article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/verified\/2021\/03\/17\/26763\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Media.am spoke about which news sites became the most frequent sources of information for the websites News.am, 168.am and Tert.am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t have time to read? Here are the highlights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media outlets we studied often took the information about the coronavirus from Facebook.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Official sources related to the ruling power are quoted more than any other type of source.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most cited party from the opposition wing is the RPA, although judging by the results of the parliamentary elections, it has less public support than other opposition parties. In the last parliamentary elections, the RPA received only 4.7% of the vote, significantly less than &#8220;Prosperous Armenia&#8221; and &#8220;Bright Armenia,&#8221; which moved on to become part of the National Assembly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the quoted experts are political scientists, and healthcare specialists make up only 10%. This proves that the topic of the epidemic was covered in the media more from a political perspective than a health one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most cited official sources mainly reported neutral information about the spread of the epidemic and the steps needed to prevent it. However, there were many contradictory appeals in Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan&#8217;s posts. The Prime Minister was also in a hurry to announce the positive news. For example, on April 8, when 28 positive cases were registered in Armenia, he expressed hope that we might have already overcome the epidemic curve. As you know, in the following months the number of positive cases increased from a few hundred to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fip.am\/13336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a thousand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most quoted unofficial sources were mainly from the opposition and used a very emotional vocabulary when talking about the epidemic. These sources claimed that the government had failed both domestic and foreign policy, the situation was &#8220;terrible,&#8221; therefore, a new, more experienced government should come. It was often claimed that the government was sowing hatred and dividing the society.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">168.AM: The most cited experts on the coronavirus were political scientists<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have downloaded and studied 5,164 articles from the 168.am website to find out what sources the media outlet used to disseminate information. We have singled out the Facebook hyperlinks found in the articles. The data of the sub-website blog.168.am were also taken into account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We researched the Facebook pages cited in 950 articles and divided them into six groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Official sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> related to the legislative, executive or judicial power (except for opposition MPs);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Opposition:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition politicians, parties, former officials;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Non-political<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> organizations: businesses, museums, hospitals, etc.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Experts and media specialists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including journalists, activists, civil society, doctors, lawyers, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>International sources, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including embassies, foreign celebrities;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Other <\/b>sources, including individuals, artists, clergy, and others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px;\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/5643789\/embed\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most quoted sources of 168.am by sections<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official state sources were quoted the most. 207 of the links are from the Facebook pages of various experts, activists and journalists. Opposition politicians were quoted another 142 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is noteworthy that the most frequently quoted experts are political scientists: Their posts make up more than 25% of all links in this section. At the same time, healthcare professionals were quoted in only 10% of cases. These indicators may show that the topic of the coronavirus has been politicized in Armenia. That is, it has been more a political discourse than a health-related one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts in the field of journalism and media (23%), activists, civil society representatives (10%), as well as lawyers (8%) are among the most cited experts. In 4.4% of cases, the websites referred to the posts of far-right activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most cited experts are political scientists Andranik Tevanyan and Gagik Hambaryan, public administration specialist Hovhannes Avetisyan, publicist Vahan Ishkhanyan and Razminfo website coordinator Karen Vrtanesyan. They all have a strong political position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the opposition politicians, almost half of all the links in this section, 49%, were made to the Facebook pages of the Republican Party or former members of the faction. In 7% of cases reference was made to members of the &#8220;Prosperous Armenia&#8221; party, and in 5% of the cases to &#8220;Bright Armenia.&#8221; In the case of other parties, the citations were 2% or less.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we do not divide the articles containing links into categories, we will see that 8 of the 10 most quoted Facebook pages of 168.am are official. Three of them are connected with the Ministry of Health. The Facebook pages of former Minister Arsen Torosyan, his speaker Alina Nikoghosyan and the Ministry of Health have been quoted 126 times, they make up about 13% of all citations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the unofficial sources, the most-quoted materials came from the Facebook pages of RPA Vice President Armen Ashotyan and the head of &#8220;Politeconomia&#8221; research institute Andranik Tevanyan. Andranik Tevanyan has previously worked in a number of news organizations, he is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politeconomy.org\/%d5%b0%d5%a5%d5%b2%d5%ab%d5%b6%d5%a1%d5%af%d5%b6%d5%a5%d6%80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founder and director<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the website 7or.am.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26994 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2755\" height=\"2024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01.png 2755w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01-1024x752.png 1024w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01-768x564.png 768w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01-1536x1128.png 1536w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-1_EN-01-2048x1505.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2755px) 100vw, 2755px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pages of Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan, as well as governors Andrey Ghukasyan and Garik Sargsyan (all three of them currently do not hold these positions) were among the official sources which were often cited but were not included in the top ten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Minister of Justice Arpine Hovhannisyan and former NA Deputy Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov often appeared in the list of unofficial sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEWS.AM: The majority of the most-quoted Facebook pages are official<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We reviewed 6,505 articles in Armenian on News.am and singled out the hyperlinks. Most of them, 772, referred to Facebook, which is 12% of the total data surveyed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texts with Facebook links are either exact copies or paraphrased. News.am usually also posts the original post on the website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have singled out the Facebook pages found in these articles and divided them into the same six categories: &#8220;Official,&#8221; &#8220;Opposition,&#8221; &#8220;Non-political,&#8221; &#8220;Experts,&#8221; &#8220;International&#8221; and &#8220;Other.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official sources were quoted the most &#8211; 469 times. Opposition politicians have been quoted 110 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost the same number of references were made to experts, 109 times. It is interesting that as in 168.am, the posts of healthcare specialists made up only 11% of the &#8220;Experts&#8221; section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, more than 30% of the links were from political scientists, another 27% from journalism and media professionals, and 10% from lawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the &#8220;Opposition&#8221; section, News.am had the most references to figures associated with the Republican Party (15%). The members of &#8220;Prosperous Armenia&#8221; (12%) and &#8220;Bright Armenia&#8221; (14%) party or faction were quoted almost as much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of both 168.am and News.am, the vast majority of official sources, about 24%, are references to the Ministry of Health or its staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px;\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/5644030\/embed\" scrolling=\"no\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-forms allow-scripts allow-downloads allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most quoted sources of News.am by sections<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 10 most quoted sources, eight are official and two are unofficial. Three of the official sources are related to the Ministry of Health, and the other three are related to the government. Finally, the list of the most quoted official pages includes the Facebook pages of the governor of Gegharkunik and the governor of Shirak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most quoted unofficial sources are the Facebook pages of former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan and the head of the &#8220;Politeconomia&#8221; research institute Andranik Tevanyan.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26997\" style=\"width: 2765px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26997\" class=\"wp-image-26997 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2755\" height=\"2024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01.png 2755w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01-1024x752.png 1024w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01-768x564.png 768w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01-1536x1128.png 1536w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Graph-3_EN-01-2048x1505.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2755px) 100vw, 2755px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26997\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>The most frequently quoted Facebook pages on News.am.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the official Facebook pages not included in the top ten, but often quoted, were the pages of former Kotayk governor Romanos Petrosyan, former Ararat governor Garik Sargsyan, the Armenian Joint Information Center, as well as former Defense Ministry speaker Shushan Stepanyan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently cited unofficial sources included the Facebook pages of Aghasi Yenokyan, head of the Media Defender initiative, publicist Vahan Ishkhanyan, leader of the BAP Edmon Marukyan, political scientist Gagik Hambaryan, and the Covid-19 Armenia fact-finding team. By the way, Media.am previously <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/verified\/2020\/03\/21\/20304\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">referred to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the &#8220;Covid-19 Armenia&#8221; fact-finding group: Its participants are connected with the far-right &#8220;Veto&#8221; initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What narratives were circulated by official sources?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The information circulated by official sources was mostly neutral and referred to the spread of the infection and anti-epidemic measures. Prime Minister Pashinyan&#8217;s speech, however, had peculiarities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Arsen Torosyan, Alina Nikoghosyan, Ministry of Health<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives of the Ministry of Health posted on Facebook mainly about coronavirus statistics (newly confirmed cases, deaths, etc.), urging citizens to follow certain advice, and share information about the anti-epidemic measures taken. There <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.168.am\/blog\/269665.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were also<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> denials of the information spread in the press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Nikol Pashinyan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Facebook posts and &#8220;live videos&#8221; rewritten by websites, Nikol Pashinyan presented the epidemic situation, discussed government decisions, economic issues, and support measures. He urged to follow the anti-epidemic rules and in the early stages of the epidemic often referred personally to the number of infected people, talking about their well-being. Pashinyan expressed confidence that Armenia will get out of this situation stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prime Minister was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/168.am\/2020\/05\/24\/1307883.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a hurry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to announce positive news about the large number of negative tests, the good economic situation (&#8220;we are one of the countries with the lowest inflation in the world&#8221;) and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pashinyan had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/168.am\/2020\/03\/16\/1274398.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decided to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reward the first patient with coronavirus, as he &#8220;rendered a very serious service with his high consciousness and helped the infection not to spread too much.&#8221; And, for example, on April 8, Pashinyan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.am\/arm\/news\/571354.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there were only 28 positive tests and noted that &#8220;about 90% of patients do not even have a fever,&#8221; and if this continues, &#8220;it will mean that we have overcome the peak of the coronavirus.&#8221; This, of course, was only the beginning of the epidemic, and later Armenia had between several hundred to a thousand cases a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the Prime Minister made contradictory appeals. He called for the coronavirus to be treated as a dangerous disease, but reminded that &#8220;the coronavirus will not scare us,&#8221; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/168.am\/2020\/03\/31\/1282254.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in another &#8220;live&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that one way or another we will all be infected\u2024 &#8220;There is a hypothesis circulating in the international press that many, if not all of us, will be infected with the coronavirus.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pashinyan also criticized the previous authorities. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.am\/arm\/news\/583963.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Constitutional Court a &#8220;coronavirus court,&#8221; where &#8220;they&#8217;ve been saved, they are gaining time thanks to the coronavirus.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Armenian Unified Infocenter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1in.am\/2718606.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the AUI in March 2020 to provide information on the coronavirus. The posts of the center mainly informed about the epidemiological situation (new cases, deaths, treated citizens, etc.). There were also announcements about government decisions and restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Artsakh Information Headquarters&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The posts of the Artsakh Information Headquarters mainly informed about the epidemiological situation, as well as about the measures taken by the government (restrictions, checks, disinfection, etc.). The headquarters often urged to follow only the official news to avoid false and unverified news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Gnel Sanosyan&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The posts copied from the Facebook page of the governor of Gegharkunik referred to the epidemic situation: the positive cases registered in the region, the deaths, the number of recovered people. Sanosyan also shared information about cases of infections and which settlements of the region they were found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Sanosyan, the websites also shared the posts of the governor of Ararat Garik Sargsyan and the governor of Lori Andrey Ghukasyan (they are no longer in office).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Tigran Avinyan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commandant Tigran Avinyan&#8217;s posts referred to decisions aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus, restrictions, security rules, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What narratives were circulated by unofficial sources?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the unofficial sources in the top ten most cited are politicians and one is an expert with a strong political position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2b55 Armen Ashotyan<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RPA Deputy Chairman Armen Ashontyan criticized the authorities because, in his opinion, the authorities are populist and fail the government. He cited examples that, in his opinion, testified to serious shortcomings in foreign policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashotyan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/168.am\/2020\/04\/30\/1296326.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the country is &#8220;a nuthouse,&#8221; predicted a &#8220;collapse&#8221; and devastating consequences.
