It was also considered free in 2018 and partially free in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization released its 2019 Internet Freedom Report, which states that countries with 70-100 points are considered free. Armenia has 76 points and neighboring Georgia 75.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the former Soviet Union (except the Baltic states) the Internet is free only in Armenia and Georgia. Armenia&#8217;s other three neighbors &#8211; Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran &#8211; are countries with not-free internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18226 \" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/freedom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"792\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/freedom.jpg 650w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/freedom-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report notes that the freedom of the Internet improved after the Velvet Revolution of 2018 when Nikol Pashinyan came to power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet access continues to grow. Users usually do not meet restrictions on online content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are concerns about pressures on online media, though some analysts argue that under Pashinyan&#8217;s government political persecution is less frequent on websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, online journalists face being criticized for critical content about the new government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pashinyan&#8217;s government has made significant strides in the fight against corruption, but it raises concerns about political influence on the judiciary and towards hostile media rhetoric.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom House main conclusions.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violence against journalists working online in the background of the Velvet Revolution has diminished.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2018, authorities raided the editorial office of the Yerevan.Today news site on the basis of suspicious information, seized computers and disrupted media activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 2019, the security service arrested the admin of a controversial Facebook page for inciting racial, religious, ethnic hatred. Although there were offensive posts on that page, activists expressed concern that it could be an attack on the online expression of freedom of speech.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2019, Facebook temporarily restricted several accounts belonging to Pashinyan&#8217;s public and political activists. An unknown group calling itself Digital Granate claimed responsibility for these blockages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet access<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internet access in Armenia continues to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armenia is 8th in the top ten, positioned right after the US. Neighboring Georgia is in the19th place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iceland, Estonia and Canada are the leaders in internet access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market for information and communication technologies is relatively diverse, with local and foreign internet providers competing for customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although in terms of internet access and quality there is a difference between urban and rural areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Content restrictions<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government of Armenia has not blocked users from accessing online content, social media or any other communications software consistently and on a mass scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, online content is available to a wide range of people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blocking applies only to local content that contains pornography and copyright infringement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to recent reports on Facebook, Twitter and Google&#8217;s transparency, the Armenian government has not made any requests to remove content.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violations of user rights<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few prosecutions have been filed against Internet users or bloggers for content posted on the Internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The topic of financial penalties for defamation still raises concerns, although the number of cases and penalties applied in recent years has decreased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the coverage of the Velvet Revolution, online media reporters have been subjected to violence by law enforcement, but violence has declined since those days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><b>Gayane Asryan<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Freedom House human rights organization, the Internet in Armenia is free.
