



{"id":18174,"date":"2019-10-25T11:10:13","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T11:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/media.am\/?p=18174"},"modified":"2019-11-02T13:26:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T13:26:38","slug":"they-say-checking-is-important-but-they-rarely-check","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/media.am\/en\/newsroom\/2019\/10\/25\/18174\/","title":{"rendered":"They Say Checking Is Important, But They Rarely Check"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.am\/en\/media-consumers-and-consumption-patterns-in-a-new-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Media Consumption in Armenia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> survey, conducted by CRRC and MIC, attempted to find out through questionnaires how people verify the reliability of a media product. And how do they justify their own behavior in the media field?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The elements of media literacy included in the study allow people to conclude that fact-checking and media information is important, but by and large, respondents rarely take the few extra steps to check what they consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1200 people living throughout Armenia were asked the question, &#8220;In what cases is the information considered suspicious\/unreliable?&#8221; In addition, respondents were able to give up to three answers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">22% said it was suspicious if the information was very unlikely, 19% if the title and content were inconsistent, 17% if they heard it from an unknown person or site, 15% if the source is not listed, 10% if it is shared by untrustworthy people or websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first condition of trusting the platform or person is to be familiar. You trust or not depending on if you know them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The question &#8220;How do you check suspicious information&#8221; was an open-ended question. That is to say, people were not offered answers, they themselves formulated verification mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18045 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"792\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-2.jpg 792w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">32% of those surveyed search the Internet to check out suspicious information. 26% look for the same information on websites they trust. 23% asked acquaintances and friends, and 16% asked for information from the source. 3% of the respondents write a post on social networks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Respondents in their answers, although indicating the need for at least double-checking, described their own behavior on the network and acknowledged that they did not always go through the chain of links.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From this graph it can be seen that only 6% of readers click on the source link provided in the article, 25% never do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And 34% say they never check information by going to other pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18047 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"786\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-1.jpg 786w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-1-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0563\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-1-768x441.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The responses, which characterize trust in the various media, also show that people value what they are familiar with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The question &#8220;How reliable is the information provided by the following sources&#8221; with clear versions of the answers indicates that the answers &#8220;very reliable&#8221; and &#8220;generally not reliable&#8221; are few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most people are hesitant and give average answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18049 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0533\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0533\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0533\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-3-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/\u0533\u0580\u0561\u0586\u056b\u056f-3-768x430.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While studying this chart, it becomes clear that Russian media continues to be a serious information resource in Armenia. And many republican radio broadcasters are perceived as a reliable source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Respondents, when describing a media literate person, first mentioned the technical capability of using the internet (18.7%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, the ability to analyze the material&#8217;s perception (14.2%), the ability to understand the purpose of the material (11.5%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People also consider media literacy a requirement to open social network accounts\/pages and also make money through the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>Nune Hakhverdyan<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Media Consumption in Armenia survey, conducted by CRRC and MIC, attempted to find out through questionnaires how people verify the reliability of a media product.
