Attack on Journalists, 2016

On July 17, 2016, the group Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun) seized the Police Patrol Regiment building in Yerevan.

According to data by the Yerevan-based Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression, 27 journalists and camera operators were harmed while covering the demonstrations and law enforcement operations that lasted two weeks in Yerevan’s Erebuni district.

Nineteen journalists were physically attacked; eight journalists were pressured and persecuted.

Journalists’ video-recording devices and photo cameras were broken, and the filmed footage was deleted.

Eight people were sentenced to criminal charges: four were sentenced to one year in prison; four were fined 200,000 to 250,000 dram. None are police officers.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia is still examining the legality of police actions.
